Go Away, Rita!!
I’m in a bit of a panic right now. Been watching the news all day and it definitely looks like hurricane Rita’s making her way over here. So far it looks like it’s going more towards Galveston and Houston, but you just never know if it’ll go a bit more south. If it does, we’re screwed. This hurricane’s been in the water so long I’m afraid to know what category it’s going to be by the time it makes landfall. I feel so bad for the people who live in Galveston and Houston; and for us down here if it hits us. Maybe it isn’t such a good idea to be watching this documentary on the History channel–they’re mostly talking about hurricane Katrina.
So far, we haven’t prepared at all. Even with hurricane Emily we were at the Dollar General as soon as word was out that it would be here in a few days buying water, canned food and batteries. They say it should be here by Friday night and we haven’t done shit.
What if it does come down here and it’s a Category 3+? My in-laws’ house is wood-frame and over 20 years old, I feel sick just thinking about what might happen. Our apartment might make it since it was built just a few years ago, but their house??
I’m on the verge of hyperventilating. Oh gosh, and the flooding! I’m not talking about the type of flooding that happened in New Orleans, I’m talking just a few inches, maybe 2 feet of flooding. It floods REALLY BAD in front of our apartment and the back of my in-laws’. Just 2 weekends ago when there was a 30-minute thunderstorm John and I were out there sweeping the water out and frantically trying to pile up sandbags to keep the water out. We need more sandbags *bites nails*.
Gotta think of something else…um…started on Access today at school. It’s pretty interesting and not as difficult as I thought it’d be. We had an assignment, where we had to make up a company and employees and add them to a database and guess what our company name (Lucy, Rossy, and mine—Mayra, Ricci and Joe were in another group) was? 80’s Antiques. And I swear it wasn’t just my idea, Lucy was actually the one who brought it up
. It was cool. We finished pretty early so I made a banner out of some of my collections pics. Can’t wait to see what else we’ll do.
I feel a little better. John’s making fun of me because I’m freaking out and publicly posting about it, but just wait. Just wait till the hurricane’s almost here—he’s going to turn inside out with paranoia and write in all caps in his blog. Ha!

Right now it’s a Cat 4. Even if it stays at Cat 4 and all you get are outerbands and still like Cat 2-3 winds, there will still be a lot of damage, but mainly to the trees and other vegetation. This link is helpful in seeing what damage each Category can bring:

The ones I got hit by were a 2 and a 3, and we didn’t take a direct hit, yet the damage was unbelievable. Definitely don’t let your inlaws stay in a wooden house. Tell them this panicky girl in Florida keeps saying to get their asses out. If you’re in a low-lying area, look for friends whose homes are higher and who live in concrete structures with roofs that aren’t 300 years old to stay with and ride the storm out. Seriously, at least find an alternate place to go if you feel your home is unsafe after reading the link I gave you. There are certain roofs that are sure to be blown right off in their entirety during the storm, and ones that will weaken with rain and collapse. Prepare, prepare, prepare. I can’t stress it enough.
The people in the Astrodome are probably having heart-failure right now. Bad luck and weather is chasing them.

Oh, gosh, I hope everything’s going to be okay. I have no experience in handling hurricanes, so I wish everybody’s safe, and will be safe. Just calm down, and do whatever you think is the best thing to do.
Stay safe!
