My Summer Thrill: A Post About Succulents
I spend most of my work days daydreaming about being at home. Most of the time, the daydream’s setting is the porch.

Or in the kitchen cooking with the girls while I swoon over my succulents ^_^.

This has been my “thing” lately; well, the weeks I’m kid-less. Free time is spent reading succulent care blogs or Pinning Succulents I eventually want to possess. Or visiting nurseries (like during lunch on Tuesday and after work today) or Home Depot, like on Wednesday night with John (and then he and Jorge ruined my workout by convincing me to eat Wing Stop!!). Gardening just…soothes me.

I never thought I’d get into gardening and then I did when we moved to this house and I planted flower beds everywhere. Then the Great Hail Storm of 2012 hit and ruined it all and then I stuck to my little succulents I’d planted in 2011 when I had the kiddos paint terra cotta pots for them. Just recently I got back into them (succulents are okay with being neglected, but I kind of overdid it, heh) and wanting to grow them myself, from cuttings.
So I searched for succulent propagation blogs and found these two to be really helpful: Life With SarahB and Succulents & Sunshine
So far, I think I’ve been doing pretty well!

This batch were the first little guys to undergo my latest project. I left them in the egg carton so the little cut end would dry up. Not all of them made it =|.

I laid some dirt in the carton, laid them out and began giving them a spritz of water once a day, every day for about 2 weeks.

That little cactus actually hitched a ride from Home Depot to our house when I bought a few other small pots. I hope he’ll grow!
Here are the leaves with their roots and buds almost a month later (I took these photos today):

These are a few little buds that completely propagated on their own. I actually found this Ghost Plant bud propagating on the windowsill!

I put it in a small pot, along with 2 other buds that began to propagate on their own in my large succulent pot:

This little guy overgrew the little pot Emily had painted. I picked up this blue-green-yellow pot at that nursery I stopped at today and transferred him over as soon as I got home.

I added the teeny Ghost Plant that had propagated itself so it can hopefully, eventually fill in that side of the pot. I was happy to see the Ghost Plant had a new sprout on one of the stems, too.
So now I have my first succulent garden that I wrote about 3 entries ago:

I’ve since removed the Baby Toes, which I named Roger, from the pot. It seemed unhealthy when I bought it, but it just never got better and eventually it started shriveling up. I took such good care of my first Baby Toes and now I can’t seem to keep them alive :(.
My Donkey Tail Burrito is also having a bit of trouble. At first I thought it was too hot outside, so I moved the pot to the windowsill and it’s still dropping a lot of “beads”. My String of Pearls was unhealthy when I bought it as well, and doesn’t seem to be getting any better. I’m keeping my fingers crossed though. Maybe neglecting it a bit will help.
I had bought a few succulents here and there for the past couple of weeks. A pink/green Echeveria and a Gollum at H-E-B, a severely over-watered Zebra Haworthia from Valley Garden Center, and then the other few that I bought when John and I went to Home Depot this Wednesday. So I made Succulent Garden #2:

I’m so happy with them. I hope I can keep them all alive. I’m so impatient. I want the sprouts to grow and I want to know the big ones will be ok!
So there you go: a bit of my madness and my current hobby. I’d been in a funk the last weeks of May and early June (no idea why, either, it was just weird), but I’ve been taking this literally lately:

It seems to be working pretty well!

I went thru a stage that I wanted to plant things, it did not matter what I planted as long as it was something that grew int something. The first thing I ever tried growing was a tomato plant and it did grow beautifully. When I went to pick them, on the under side there where holes from worms getting into them, I was so bummed but excited that I was able to do that. I started doing herbs like cilantro and parsley and things like that and they grew but bugs always got to them :(. I eventually stopped because I came to the conclusion that I was doing something wrong and I was not meant grow things but I have always has so much respect and admiration for those who do it all the time. 🙂 those cactuses are so gorgeous i wish i could plant something like that :).
Caleb, my sweet!!! It’s so good to hear from you :)!!
It’s so cool that you planted veggies and herbs; my friend and I were just talking about that today. I would LOVE to be able to plant veggies and fruits, but I’m not familiar with them at all and I’d hate to ruin them, heh. I spend a lot of time looking up succulents so I’m getting a little better at caring for them. Some are sensitive little things, though, so it’s a learning process for sure. My BFF and I were just at Lowe’s today and I got more plants. I think I need therapy hehe!
LOL well plants are a much healthier vice to have than other things people tend to splurge on LOL… 😛 and im glad you remember me. I know I tend to disappear and what not but i finally got a paid domain and hosting and im back for a while lol :P…
LIke I said i tried the planting thing and it sucked that when they where ready bugs would get to them so they where not any good to use :(… i didnt know what kind of pesticide to use or how much because i did not want to ruin the plant using so much i did it just to try it i guess lol… this may actually spark my interest again 😉 thanks now LOL…
I completely agree! It is definitely my current vice, heh.
It is a little disheartening when our little plants leave us lol. I had a beautiful topiary at my front door and it got a fungus and died on me. No matter the amount of sprays used that the local nursery prescribed *sigh*. Sometimes it just happens, but it’s fulfilling to try again and watch them LIVE!
Of course I remember you! I saw that you have a new domain; I’m glad you do! I hope you do take up gardening again. We can exchange tips :D.
I think I may just do that, my hubbys mom loves gardening and planting and she would be the best person to learn from. I think this is a good time of year to start right? LOL I have a friend who grows all her own veggies and always gives me stuff like squash and zucchini and stuff and you can really taste the difference…
Yeah this time is a paid domain and hosting not the free domain and free hosting, that way i will have to keep it up since I can not stand wasting money LOL :P.
She normally plants flowers and has so many different types and they grow so beautifully. I have always been interested in this but always gave up after those mishaps and I have always just wanted to do fruits and veggies and herbs to save money :). I think I will I think I will do it again 😀
Your mom-in-law would be the best to learn from; a seasoned veteran in gardening! I get lots of tips from one of my co-workers; an older, very hip, very knowledgeable lady that I totally look up to :). Her garden is TO DIE FOR!
I’ve realized auto-withdrawn payments for my hosting and domain the past 12+ years is what has helped me keep it for so long LOL. I kinda forget about it, then I come back and post again. It’s good therapy to keep on standby hehe 🙂
Yes, she said she will show me what she knows which I think will be fun. I am excited about it.
Well I purchased mine and paid for it for 2years for right now but they send out invoice 30days before it will expire which will help me remember to pay LOL… Out of all of the blogs I used to read back in early 2000’s, yours is the only one that is still up and running LOL or is updated lol. I am also excited about blogging and doing my graphics again. I will list your link on the site on my next update :).
What host do you use? I have collabora365.com which is a windows based hosting and I love every bit of it. They came recommended by the Microsoft.com website so i went with them, also they include a free domain name for life as long as you are with them. I only pay $35a year including the domain but I got it for 2yrs …
Caleb, I thought I had replied already!! I use totalchoicehosting; have used them for YEARS already and I can’t complain. It’s $5 a month, but it’s good and my domain is from godaddy.com. Seems like you’ve got a pretty good darn deal there!
I’m glad to still have the site, hehe. I wish a lot of the old school bloggers still had theirs LOL. I miss everyone! I have a lot of the girls from back then on Facebook and Instagram; we still keep in touch :)!
Did you start your planting??
I have no started my planting yet but we recently had to have our septic tank replaced and the entire back yard is so dug up and its all real good fresh soil, I am going to take advantage of that and start this coming up weekend. I am going to wal-mart to buy all kinds of seeds and see what will grow LOL. my mother in law said she will help me with whatever I needed so I am hoping I will be the next jolly green giant with my garden :D…
That’s so great!! I’m currently having trouble with some of my succulents. Ever since I came back from vacation a few of my succulents seem to have either dried up or were overwatered, ugh. I’m thinking I need to replant them into their own pots until I “learn” how to water them properly. I thought these were supposed to be pretty self-sustaining plants LOL!
I saw some at Sam’s Club that I thought where so pretty but hurt when I touched them. They look kind of hard to grow and keep up. I think its awesome that you have the patience to deal with them.
I have *some* patience lol. I get anxiety and turn into a worry-wart when I see that they aren’t doing well :(. I managed to kill a cactus, can you believe that?? Lol
Lovely! I have a windowsill full of plants now, but only a few succulents. I plan on starting the propagating process. I hope they survive!
OOh, I wanna see a photo of your plants!! It’s easy to start the propagating process, but it’s sad when it’s going so well and then some of the darn things die :(. My jellybean cuttings were propagating so well, and I checked on them today and I may have overwatered them because their parent plant was shriveling up :(. I hope they make it!
