Costumes, Work & Thanksgiving 2014

I guess now’s a good a time as ever to update. I’m in the living room with Jorgie, Justin and Julien, who are all busied by electronics and we’re probably all a little under the tryptophan haze after having had Thanksgiving leftovers for lunch. My kiddos were picked up to spend the weekend with their dad’s family. It always feels a bit melancholy when they’re not here after Thanksgiving, but it is their Dad’s weekend and I’m glad we were able to be together for Thanksgiving. Providing that I don’t work next weekend (I’m REALLY keeping my fingers crossed), I’m hoping we’ll have a fun beginning-of-December, as the City is putting on their Holiday Extravaganza (not formally the name of the event, but it may as well be!).

So I’ll go back a few weeks and update on whatever I remember.

The week following Halloween was the first of many hectic weeks at work, little did I know. I started out by thinking up some centerpieces for the Annual Banquet, along with my other duties. The hours just whizzed by. It took 3 trips to Hobby Lobby to find everything we’d need for the centerpieces. My week in a nutshell: Put the centerpieces together, attend a small Expo (where we made some good contacts for my Expo), find a last-minute costume for the Annual Banquet (60’s theme this year!), and get ready for and attend our Wednesday meeting, then help get the museum ready for the Annual Banquet. It was a colorful week, indeed!

I picked the boys up on Wednesday since I’d be swamped on Friday, and their dad liked the idea since he was going to “borrow” them the next week on Wednesday for his birthday, too. So it worked out. Of course the weather would be cruddy for the Annual Banquet; it was drizzly and chilly. But it was a fun night! Anabel and Blanca did a great job :).

The decor was amazing and bright and the evening flowed like a dream.

We also got to admire the beautiful altars created to celebrate Dia de los Muertos. Dania from the Incubator was one of the main artists that worked on the Alice in Wonderland-inspired altar. It was beautiful!

Also happening this night was a mysterious texter that was sending messages to Jorge letting him know she was thinking about him and that she knew where he lived. We immediately assumed it was his psychotic ex-girlfriend from highschool (who has on 2 separate occasions in 2012 and just this year attempted to get in contact with him again via Facebook), but as we got more information realized it was somebody completely unexpected! I’m gonna have to hide him!!

When I got home from the Banquet, and after settling down, Jorge and I had a long talk. We’ve both been so busy and exhausted that we’d failed to spend time together at home, and just talk. It was a good reminder and I’m glad he took the initiative to bring it up :).

~~~
I went home early due to too many hours at work and got to eat lunch with my love the next day at Espi’s. Didn’t stop me from working from home, though. We were on a time-crunch for our Expo and I wanted to get as many exhibitors as I could.
Picked up the kiddos and just had a lazy weekend. Spent most of the time outside, or lounging, or cleaning the girls’ room with them. Alaethia came and piled her Care Bears on the sofa and said, “We can get rid of these now.” My heart naturally broke into a million pieces :(. I remember when she would take every single one of them she owned everywhere she went.
Case in point:
The next work week was a blur of interviews (my first radio interview in Spanish, ever) and photo shoots for the Newsletter. It also included a meeting regarding the upcoming food festival over some cappuccino and lunch later during the week at Taste of India.
Which reminds me of the night John decided he was going to re-enact Sia’s “Chandelier” video. The kids were already in bed so only Jorge and I got to witness this hilarity. He saw the video one time and said, “Ok, I got it,” and proceeded to do his thang. And then he wanted to watch Bollywood videos he pretended to know the words to and I couldn’t UNHEAR him at Taste of India. Jesus.
Cut to my previous post update and then it was the 18th of November. Jorge and I’s Still-somewhat-unofficial-offical Anniversary date. 4 years and I couldn’t be happier :*).
Our anniversary date :)
Our anniversary date 🙂
Kumori was the 2nd place we ever had a date at. Our first was at Mimi’s but it closed down a year ago :(.
This week was hectic, too. I had to make centerpieces for Michelle and Ivan’s event, get the food festival brochure in the mail and work on the Expo and attend meetings. To say I was overwhelmed is an understatement.
The girls had art project after art project that week. They didn’t have to turn them in till December 1st, but Mom taught them to get things over with fast, and that they did. I had to pick up more pom poms and glitter, but I always welcome a trip to Michael’s hehe.
They also and homework galore. Jorge is such a huge help. He is WAY more patient at teaching little kids math than I am. It’s almost as though he enjoys it :). I got to get us some Delia’s one of those nights, so that was a welcome change :).
Thursday was Michelle and Ivan’s event and that day felt like it just zoomed by. Friday came around and I was so overwhelmed (and PMS’ing, TMI) that I bawled by the end of the day. I hate that feeling. You know it’s coming, too. When your eyes well up and you get that lump in your throat and the waterfall of tears comes and there’s nothing you can do. Oh yeah, and it happened in front of my boss . FML.
I was relieved when it was time to go and picked up the kiddos. I spent time with them as much as I could since I knew I’d be working Saturday (for set-up) and Sunday (for the Expo). They’re just awesome ^_^.
How did those boys get so HUGE?? Can someone make it stop??
Set-up went well and the event went as good as it could go. 2 exhibitors didn’t show up, but at least they’d already paid =\. We didn’t have the 4,000+ people we wanted but it was a good event. And I was SO GLAD it was over!
I met an author that day who gave me his book to help with my acne problem. That’s what I love about my job: the people I meet. I know he and his lovely wife were placed in my path for a reason, and I’m glad to have met them :). (Especially after all the stress from the week before; my face was ravaged! :I)
I went shopping for something to wear for our 50’s photo shoot. Me and my brilliant ideas. We did end up finding a gentleman with a ’56 Ford Victoria, thanks to EZ and the contacts we made the weekend of the car show, but now we needed to find clothes! I was so stressed. I did end up finding some little red flats but who knew what else I was going to do.
So Monday comes around and I jump right into my next 3 events: the Mexican Artisan Expo, the Food Festival and the ladies’ project. I had tons to do and had to break up my time into sections because I’m notorious for developing ADD and not sticking to one thing and then I become overwhelmed. I went to Old Navy during my lunch hour to find something to wear, and found a 50’s-era looking jacket. The only one in the entire store in my size. Didn’t even have a tag and had a scrape on the “leather” arm, but it would have to do.
The car was beautiful! The couple who owns it were so nice and agreed to let us use it at the Festival, too!
Fixing my hair after the shoot
I couldn’t keep my darn hair in the bandana. By the time I took this photo my curls had already fallen apart, but I liked how the final photo came out.
I got home that evening and made dinner and then made some banana bread while Jorge and Jaylen played Xbox and while the other kiddos chilled out. I was glad to have had such a productive day and had productive days at work on Tuesday and Wednesday, too.
Jorge’s boys were dropped off that afternoon and my kiddos were picked up. Jorge and I braved the crowds at HEB for last minute stuff and came out alive and well. Jorgie and Justin were picked up around midnight, for some reason, but all our kids would be back the next day for Thanksgiving :).
We had a really low-key Thanksgiving. It was a little different since there weren’t any kiddos around and it was quiet and Jorge’s family wasn’t here like they have been the past 2 years, but we took our time. I made breakfast for Jorge, John and myself and then we watched TV. Poor Jorge had a splitting headache, but we fired up the Sonos and got all the trimmings and turkey ready for dinner. He buttered up that turkey and wrapped it in peppered bacon, while I chopped and peeled and cooked :). Then we picked up my kiddos and his were dropped off by the time we got here. We ate around 6:30pm and it was amazing!
Jorge slowly went into a food coma, heh. We let him be, and the girls painted while the boys played video games. Eenan was taking advantage since he’d been grounded all week due to a bad report card =\. I put all the food away and washed dishes while my Emmos rinsed. Then we cuddled up on the sofa, Jorge woke up and he played with the kids while I slipped into slumber.
Poor thing had to work today. I woke up around 30 minutes after he left and made the kids banana pancakes. Around 10:30am I finally decided to get ready and check out whatever was left of the Black Friday sales. With all this buzz about “Black Friday” starting on Thanksgiving, I didn’t want to bother going out with the crowds. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Target was calm and neat. AND, I ended up finding some pretty good deals for the little ones! I’m only a bit sad I missed out on the $2 towels, heh.
My kiddos were picked up :(, I warmed up leftovers for the boys and I, I vacuumed a bit and that brings us to however long it’s taken me to type this out. Gonna get dinner ready for when Jorge gets home. Turkey, or turkey??
Artsy Fartsy
Jorge and I were kid-less this past weekend and we literally tried fitting as much as we could into our days as was physically possible (and without becoming stressed out, heh).
We hung around at home on Friday night, snacking on crackers, cheese, sausage slices and wine with John, and later, Junior.
This was, of course, after I’d gotten home from a long day at work and started organizing my bookcase:
Yum Yums, Care Bear ceramics and other bits!
Yum Yums, Care Bear ceramics and other bits!
I got nowhere fast with my desk. It’s always such a mess *sigh*.
I woke up at 6:30am to meet Mary and the girls at the girls’ school to support Alaethia during her very first UIL meet. Jenny and I stood around together, admiring the kids’ artwork on the walls and crossing our fingers for the girls. The girls emerged from class and were cheerful about how they “almost wrote the entire page!”. We exchanged smoochies and then Mary left with the girls.
Jorge had a rare day off ^_^. I got home and he got ready while I paid the bills online (he and John had both abstained me from doing so the night before, grr).
We dropped some fliers off for my upcoming event, then went to breakfast at Espi’s. I had some Abuelita hot chocolate (of course) and some menudo. And Jorge ordered choriqueso. DOH! My doctor didn’t prescribe my cholesterol meds this time around (they have faith in me, heh), so I didn’t want to push it, but I couldn’t resist!
We met EZ at a car show afterwards, since we’re looking for some 50’s cars for an upcoming photo shoot and the food festival in January. Made some contacts and then Jorge so patiently agreed to take me to Hobby Lobby and subject himself to lots of squeeing and “OMG, look at this!”. Little did I know he was behaving so well because he planned on playing video games and taking a nap haha.
I had my canvases I’d purchased about a month ago and wanted to paint something for the hall bathroom to match the new color scheme. I got some supplies and then got home and got to work while Jorge played on the Xbox.
A table full of ideas!
A table full of ideas!
I searched through several similiar-colored paintings on Pinterest and finally decided on an idea.
Took about an hour to cut and mod podge and paint altogether. I sent the boys a photo and Eenan said, “Holy wow, Mom!!”
The finished piece!
The finished piece!
We spent the rest of the evening at home, after searching all over McAllen for something to eat (we eventually decided on Salads Plus. It’s so expensive!).
Started our Sunday by John and I making a run to HEB. Found some Abuelita hot chocolate creamer (EEP!) and I made us some eggs on toast with cream cheese for breakfast.
Since I’d already done the grocery shopping and making breakfast for everyone I took full advantage of being lazy and chilling out on the sofa with my Mabby ^_^. I searched for ways to seal my painting since it was hanging in the humid bathroom. Jessica gave me some ideas.
John used us as guinea pigs to test out a Cordon Bleu recipe he’ll need to make with his classmates for 150 people. It was delish!
I made a quick run to Michael’s since I had a 50% off coupon. I got some Liquitex to seal my painting and looked around for ways to organize my desk and paint supplies. I’d been searching on none other than Pinterest for some inspiration to organize all my crappola, because as you can see, it’s insane.
I fell in love with so many different craft rooms/studios:
Like this one.
And this one.
Then I remembered I had my scrapbook organization box. So, after my day of work today, and picking Alaethia up at UIL, and going to the library, and picking up prescriptions at HEB, and making dinner, and spending time with the girls…
Silly things!
…and loving our snail-mail packages! Alaethia saved up her Tooth Fairy money and ordered Littlest Pet Shop toys on eBay (thus causing Emily to show me some she liked on eBay for an hour). And I received a package from Feeln, where they’re showing the new Rainbow Brite series exclusively!
…and talking to the boys and putting the girls to bed…I finally got around to organizing my box:
Now I just need to clean the rest of my desk!!
I can’t wait to get home and fix it up tomorrow. This week is a hectic one for sure. Added to my schedule tomorrow: painting at the Incubator!
Halloween 2014
Monday, October 27th – I had a long to-do list that needed to be accomplished before 4pm. Alaethia’s 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Hammond, had approached me about encouraging her to join UIL Creative Writing. So I did, and she accepted and she gets out of practice at 4pm on Mondays and Tuesdays. I was glad to pick her up and find that she really enjoyed herself :). When I’d brought it up to her the day before, she was nervous and got teary about it. She had flashbacks from last year, when she tried out for Chess Club and she was left in the cafeteria with the bus kids, they tried putting her on a bus and she didn’t even get to try out till Mario got there and couldn’t find her. So, I got where she was coming from, what with being traumatized and all. But, Mrs. Hammond walked her to the pick up area so she could become familiar with the routine, so that was great :).
Got home and talked to the boys, then helped Jaylen re-do his Powerpoint presentation that we’d worked on over the weekend. Helped the girls with homework, made Frito-pie chili (awful, you don’t have to tell me!!) and then watched “Guardians of the Galaxy” with them and Jorgie and Justin. Of course I missed the entire thing ’cause I fell asleep, heh.
Tuesday, October 28th – Tuesday was another day spent going non-stop at work; calling potential exhibitors for the upcoming Expo and working on January’s 1st Expo. It was another day I had to get my to-do list done before 4pm. Although it felt amazing to get 30 extra minutes at home with the girls, I helped Alaethia with her math till 7pm. The way they teach that math, OMG, it’s ridiculous. Completely different from the way I learned math, but well, that was decades ago!
Once the girls had finished up homework, eaten dinner, showed me videos on Youtube and were put into bed, Jorge, John and I watched Sons of Anarchy. My favorite part of Tuesday :).
Wednesday, October 29th – I got the girls ready to go right on time and dropped them off (in the drop-off area–such big girls!) and then I made my way to United Way to meet the girls for a Forum we were invited to. It was very informational and we got to have some snacks. Ms. Thelma outdid herself with the decorations, like always :).
I arrived to the office and ran to the kitchen/conference room to help serve fajitas for the luncheon at work. We had so many people arrive, which is good, but out of 200, only 100 RSVP’d =\. We almost ran out of food; the staff got to scrounge around for bits hehe. Still, I was grateful for my awesome taco and then went to the front desk for reception duty. I wore heels that day for the first time in months…and realized right away just WHY I never wear them anymore. Grr. My feet haven’t been the same since, I think. #oldfart
Thursday, October 30th – Got to work after dropping the girls off and my boss and I started the day by scouting new exhibitors. We actually got one to sign up on the spot! It’s amazing how many new health-related businesses there are since February!
Got back and got ready for a lunch meeting regarding that same Expo. We’ve been having weekly meetings since it’s so close. I’ve never had so much Jason’s Deli in my life hehe.
Since Mario had already taken the girls (his weekend), Rosie and I took a stroll through a nearby thrift shop to find something 60’s-esque for the Annual Banquet. Michelle, Rosie and I had realized with a jolt of shock that the Annual Banquet was in a week…and we had no costumes yet.
So we looked around and found a few things and laughed at a few other ensembles but didn’t find anything we actually liked once we tried them on. We decided to check out Amazon with Michelle the next day.
Friday, October 31st – Halloween! This would be the first Halloween in 3 years we don’t have my kiddos. I’d gotten away with having them so far, even when it was their Dad’s weekend, but he asked to have them this year =\.
We had cake from Maritza and those delicious cookies Trisha brings from Sweet N Tasty every year. I got ready for our Food Festival meeting and once we finished up with that, met Valerie at her workplace. She’d invited us a couple of weeks before to try out their amazing burgers and visit the facility since we’d never been.
It was a great visit; they were having their Halloween costume contest and pumpkin-decorating contest, so that was fun to watch/judge.
And the burgers…oh my gosh, the burgers. They really were amazing!!
We headed to make more visits for the Expo. Got back to the office and checked out costumes with Michelle and Rosie. We ordered some and crossed our fingers. Then I made some calls and took some payments and made my way home.
I was feeling a little lonely since the kids weren’t home. We’d been invited to Jim and Joyce’s yearly Halloween party but I wasn’t feeling much up to going. Jorge got home and at the last minute, we decided hey, we’re kid-less, why not go out and enjoy ourselves?
I found my bag of Halloween makeup (bought tons last year on clearance) and made a quick zombie costume. Jorge got out of work a bit later than he planned, so he didn’t dress up. We waited for my kids to arrive (their Dad was nice enough to bring them over) and we had Krispy Kreme donuts I’d bought from a fundraiser and had a quick visit.
Those two!! Hilarious!
My kiddos left and then Jorge and I took off to Jim’s. Jim and Joyce were dressed as hippies (doubled as their costume for the Annual Banquet–smart!!), Thelma and her hubby were a cloud and a person struck by lightning, Michelle was a Christmas “HoHoHo” 😛 and EZ was a priest. We had fun chatting and eating little snacks.
Scary snacks!
Jim and Joyce always out-do themselves! It wasn’t a very long visit, but we were proud of ourselves for leaving the house for once hehe. All-in-all it was a great Halloween!
With Michelle, my love and babies ^_^
Saturday, November 1st – Jorge went to work and I stayed in bed, covers over my head. He kissed me goodbye and told me to sleep. And I did: till 8:30am. And it was AMAZEBALLS!! It was the first weekend in a few months that I didn’t need to be up at 5 or 6am!
I made myself some breakfast and coffee and ate outside on the porch while I read my book, all huddled up in my hoodie and sweatpants.
My happy place <3 My happy place <3[/caption] It was 75 degrees outside and such a beautiful day. I put my phone down (where I was reading my eBook) and admired the birdies perched on the branches and flying around. I eventually got sleepy and curled up on the sofa to allow myself to pass out. Then I remembered I had to withdraw money to pay bills and I got over the sleepiness right away. But oh well; duty calls. I even did grocery shopping, cleaning and visited Gramma with Mom :). Evening came and I spoke to my kiddos to see how their day went. Then Jorge and I went over to Noni's for a BBQ. The food was awesome and so were the Peach Belini's and hanging out with Lisa and Joyce is always fun. There were technical difficulties with the movie we were trying to watch outside, but they changed it over to a game and we enjoyed conversation instead. We had officially gone "out" 2 nights in a row! I sat there, taking it all in (TWSS), and thought, Wow. 4 years later and here we are. 4 years ago was a crazy time for us, but we pulled through and here we are together :’).
